### Introduction
AU eRequesting is provided to support the use of HL7® FHIR®© for diagnostic requesting in an Australian context. It sets the minimum expectations on FHIR resources to support conformance and implementation in systems.

AU eRequesting defines the Data model and RESTful API interactions that set minimum expectations for placing and accessing electronic requests.

The focus AU eRequesting Release 1 (R1) is support of pathology and medical imaging requests in community-based care provision, with consideration for future use beyond this scope.

- **AU Base** defines local concepts for use in an Australian context introducing relevant identifiers, terminology, extensions.
- **AU Core** defines a set of conformance requirements that enforce a set of 'minimum requirements' on the local concepts from AU Base, specifying the elements, extensions, vocabularies, and value sets that SHALL be present and how they SHALL be used, along with the RESTful API interactions.
- **Use case IGs** (AU eRequesting and AU Provider Directory) build on AU Core to address specific use cases, defining a set of conformance requirements on top of AU Core, using additional building blocks from AU Base as needed.

[AU Base](https://build.fhir.org/ig/hl7au/au-fhir-base/)|This IG defines Australian realm concepts including terminology, identifiers, and extensions. AU Core uses AU Base, where available, as the basis for profiles that define the FHIR resources to be supported, and the elements, extensions, vocabularies, and value sets that SHALL be present are identified, and how they are used is defined.

AU eRequesting is compliant with the profile conformance requirements in [AU Core](https://build.fhir.org/ig/hl7au/au-fhir-core/).
[AU Core](https://build.fhir.org/ig/hl7au/au-fhir-core/)|This IG defines a set of conformance requirements that enforce a set of minimum requirements on the local concepts from AU Base, specifying rules for the elements, extensions, vocabularies, and value sets, and the RESTful API interactions. AU eRequesting is compliant with the profile conformance requirements in [AU Core](https://build.fhir.org/ig/hl7au/au-fhir-core/).
[HL7 Cross Paradigm Implementation Guide: Gender Harmony - Sex and Gender Representation](https://hl7.org/xprod/ig/uv/gender-harmony/informative1/)|This IG provides definitive guidance on how to exchange clinical sex and gender affirming information using HL7 models. Sex and gender concepts from this IG have been reviewed for the potential for adoption in Australia. Where adopted, these concepts are included by reference in AU Base and profiled in AU Core.

AU Realm FHIR implementation guide projects are required to follow specific publishing guidelines:
This version of the AU eRequesting FHIR IG complies with [Version 1.0 of the HL7 Australia FHIR Work Group AU Variance Requirements](https://hl7.org.au/fhir/HL7%20AU%20Variance%20Requirements%20v1.0.pdf).

HL7 Australia published FHIR implementation guides are required to follow specific publishing requirements:
- **SHOULD** use AU Core profiles
- **SHOULD** use AU Base profiles and extensions

If a FHIR implementation guide cannot comply with an AU Core profile or reuse an AU Base extension, or fails to comply with an AU Base profile, it must document the variance.

The Variance Statement identifies where an AU Realm FHIR implementation guide does not meet the expectations set by AU Base and/or AU Core. It also identifies resources not profiled in AU Base or AU Core, facilitating the FHIR Work Group's assessment for potential further development. Additionally, the Variance Statement page indicates where the AU Realm FHIR IG fully complies with AU Base or AU Core.

The Variance Statement undergoes review and assessment by the FHIR Work Group as part of the FHIR IG balloting process. For more details on the requirements of a Variance Statement, refer to [AU FHIR IG Variance Requirements](https://confluence.hl7.org/display/HA/Process%3A++AU+FHIR+IG+Variance+Requirements).
- **SHALL** include an AU Variance Statement page

AU eRequesting profiles additional resources that are not profiled in AU Base, e.g. AU eRequesting Task. Add Additionally Profiled Resources sub-heading under Variance from AU Base, and list all additional profiles.
