A guide to using Calagator

**Labels:**Deprecated

Outline

Suggested by Igal:

A. About Calagator

1. What is it? Calagator is an open-source project to create a master calendar of tech events in Portland, OR. The calendar will: import and aggregate events from other calendars; let you manually import and modify events; automatically check back for your new events to add to the calendar; and export events in a variety of calendar formats.

2. How can it help me as a community leader? Posting your events to Calagator makes them more visible and less likely to collide with other organizations' events. The effort to post events is minimized, because you can have Calagator automatically incorporate your future events.

3. How can it help my community members? Using Calagator your community members can see events of interest all in one place. Also, there are some really nice time-saving features, like just clicking to add an event to your Google Calendar, or iCal or hCal-based calendar.

B. Publishing content

1. Creating entries directly on the site. Events > Add an Event > Give the event a title, start and end time, and description. After submitting, you can edit, delete, or send to another calendar, such as Google Calendar, iCal, or hCalendar.

2. Adding entries using a static iCalendar file or dynamic feed Events > Add an Event >...> Save as iCal

3. Adding entries to a site/blog with embedded hCalendar markup Events > Add an Event >...> Get hCalendar markup

4, Using the import feature to create content Events > Import Events >(enter a URL)> Import. See the link to further information describing what can be imported. For example, events on Upcoming.yahoo.com, in a form like http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/587873/

5. Using the re-import feature If the URL will from time to time have new events for which you want Calagator to check back automatically, check the "re-import" box.

6. Using automatic Calagator checks for new events Events > Import Events >, then click "Add bookmarklet" to a bookmarklet in Calagator to have it automatically check your site for new events to add to Calagator.

C. Managing content

1. Editing events and venues when plans change or to improve content quality Events > edit > Edit link is near the far right side of the page. Clicking should provide a standard form pre-loaded with current information about the event you wish to edit.

2. Pruning duplicates TBD

D. Getting involved and requesting support

1. Why get involved? Caring team, open structure, and flexible development plan.

2. Code Sprints Announced on Calagator ahead of the event as well as on the mailing list. Often on a bi-monthly schedule. Various tech locations around town have been gracious enough to host Code Sprints.

3. Mailing list http://groups.google.com/group/pdx-tech-calendar

4. Blog http://calagator.wordpress.com/

5. Issue tracker https://github.com/calagator/calagator/issues
