The Winnie_Bot
service for Discord delivers goal-tracking and challenge-management tools optimized for writers. Using the bot's default instance or the services adjacent to it requires good behavior as outlined by this Terms of Use framework.
The Winnie_Bot
service was originally developed for three Discord servers in Australia. Since its debut, very many servers have adopted Winnie, and as such, the Core Team has experienced all the ways that users both do great things with the software, and do horrible things with the software. This document clarifies accceptable terms of use for both the bot's global instance and the Discord server that supports it.
This document governs server owners and end users. People who participate in the development of Winnie are further bound to the Contributor Code of Conduct.
Although Winnie_Bot
is GLP3, and thus may be installed manually by any server owner without limitation, the project team delivers a global Winnie instance. This instance streamlines deployment for non-tech Discord server admins and it facilitates cross-server interaction and global leaderboards. Server owners must consent to, and enforce, the following rules governing the use of this global Winnie instance:
- No one may engage in behavior intended to break the instance, including the exploitation of known bugs in the software or probing for unknowns bugs. People experienced at security must join the server and become a contributor to assist formally with software hardening.
- The server owner and moderators must prohibit users from entering inappropriate content into any public Winnie space. For the purpose of this term, "inappropriate content" includes material that harasses individuals; demeans groups of individuals on the basis of a shared identity; consists of slurs or vulgarities; inserts code, emoji, or URLs; or relates content inappropriate for minors. Additionally, for the purpose of this term, "any public Winnie space" means any user-defined text area that can be seen by others, including the names of challenges and goals.
The Core Team strongly encourages the server owner or a delegate with Manage Server privileges tojoin the Winnie_Bot Community Server
on Discord and, at a minimum, periodically review the #announcements channel. It's sufficient for one person from each server to join, although anyone is welcome.
Any server or server owner not compliant with these terms will receive notice by a member of the Core Team. This notice will detail the steps to correct the compliance gap. If a server administrator proves unwilling or unable to ensure that the Discord server or its users honor these Terms of Use, the Winnie_Bot
product owner will deploy code to disconnect the offending server from the global Winnie instance. This disconnection may be for as long or as little time as it takes to ensure that the offending server does not adversely affect the bot or other servers' members.
Any person is free to join the Winnie_Bot Community Server. People who join the community server must agree to the terms and conditions specified in the Welcome Screen. As of January 2021, those terms include:
- Anything that is against Discord's Community Guidelines is also against the rules here.
- Be respectful of others and their identities. That means using correct names and pronouns, as well. Abusive behavior is grounds for an immediate ban.
- Using reclaimed slurs is okay, but please respect it if people ask not to be referred to in a particular way. The use of slurs outside this use case is grounds for an immediate ban.
- If you are asked to stop something, stop. Respecting people's boundaries is very important.
- Do not send friend requests or DM other users unless you have permission in advance.
- This is an all-ages space whose primary purpose is to be a central hub for users of Winnie. Please keep swearing and discussion of heavy topics to a minimum, and 18+ content out of the server.
- Winnie is a labor of love, and most of the Core Team have full-time jobs. Bug fixes and feature requests will take time. Please respect this.
