Winnie_Bot Plain Language Terms of Use
Author: Dawn E. Collett
Approver: Jason Gillikin
Effective Date: v0, 2021-01-17
You can use these Terms of Use, or bits of them, as long as you follow the rules of the CC BY 4.0 license. A license is a document that tells you what you can and can't do with someone else's work. Click here for a non-plain language version of these terms.
Winnie_Bot
is a chatbot for Discord. A chatbot is a computer program that replies to messages that you send.
Winnie was made for people who write stories. She keeps track of word goals, and runs challenges so that you can see how much you can write.
If you want to use Winnie, or be part of Winnie's community spaces, you need to follow these Terms of Use. They tell you what is and isn't okay to do with the bot.
Winnie_Bot
was first made for three groups in Australia. Now, lots more groups use Winnie. The Core Team, who are the people who keep Winnie running and make her better, have seen people do good things with the bot. We have also seen people do bad things with the bot. So, we wrote these Terms of Use to tell you what things are okay and not okay to do with Winnie, and what to do and not to do in Winnie's community spaces.
The Terms of Use are for people who use Winnie, and people who own Discord servers with Winnie in. People who help to make Winnie need to follow the Contributor Code of Conduct.
Winnie_Bot
is released under a software license called GPL3. A software license is a document that tells people who write computer code what they can and can't do with other people's code. Under GPL3, anyone can make an instance, which is a copy of Winnie in Discord, and add it to their own Discord server. The Core Team also have an instance of Winnie that anyone can add to their own Discord servers. You can also see leaderboards with other groups on them when you use our instance.
If you own a server with our instance of Winnie installed, you have to follow these rules, and help people in your server to follow them too.
- If you know that doing something breaks Winnie, do not do it. If you want to find new ways to break Winnie, you need to come to the community server and become a contributor. A contributor is someone who helps to make Winnie better.
- People who own a server that Winnie is in must tell people in their server not to put inappropriate things into the bits of Winnie that other people can see. Inappropriate content is content that harasses people, belittles a person or group of people because of how they identify, has slurs or swear words in it, has computer code, emoji, or URLs in it, or is not appropriate for children.
We encourage people who own servers with Winnie in them to join the Winnie_Bot Community Server
on Discord, or have someone else who moderates the server with them join. We also ask that you check the #announcements channel at least once a month. Anyone who wants to join the community server can join, not just server owners.
If you don't follow these terms, someone from the Core Team will talk to you and ask you to fix the problems. If you don't, or can't, fix them, we will stop your server from using Winnie until we can make sure that other people using Winnie are not hurt by the problem.
Anyone can join the Winnie_Bot Community Server. People who join the community server must agree to the terms and conditions on the Welcome Screen. As of January 2021, those terms include:
- Anything that is against Discord's Community Guidelines is also against the rules here.
- Be respectful of others and their identities. That means using correct names and pronouns, as well. Abusive behavior is grounds for an immediate ban.
- Using reclaimed slurs is okay, but please respect it if people ask not to be referred to in a particular way. The use of slurs outside this use case is grounds for an immediate ban.
- If you are asked to stop something, stop. Respecting people's boundaries is very important.
- Do not send friend requests or DM other users unless you have permission in advance.
- This is an all-ages space whose primary purpose is to be a central hub for users of Winnie. Please keep swearing and discussion of heavy topics to a minimum, and 18+ content out of the server.
- Winnie is a labor of love, and most of the Core Team have full-time jobs. Bug fixes and feature requests will take time. Please respect this.
