To quote something I just wrote on Reddit:

The classic Stuffit format is really a bunch of different formats (SIT!, SITD, SIT2, and SIT5) from different points in its history, and when Stuffit Expander fails to extract a file it doesn't generally give you a clue why (for instance, whether the type is not recognized -- such as when it's in a later version's format not supported by that version -- or whether the type is recognized but the data is corrupt, parts of the file are missing, etc.) Compatibility isn't well-documented. This is a recipe for a lot of trial and error. I dare anyone to ask a real actual archivist what they think about that situation.

I wonder if it would be possible to gather a small collection of Stuffit archives representative of the various formats, and identify them by pattern or by reference to some other tool that can already distinguish them, to determine their compatibility with different Stuffit Expander versions...
