Creating A Virtual Target

You can create a virtual target by clicking Target -> Create Target on the main ShootOFF window. Doing so will open the Target Editor which will be showing a snapshot from the camera feed that was taken the same time the editor window was shown. It is recommended that you have a paper copy of the target you want to draw taped flat against the wall with your webcam pointed squarely at it before opening the target editor. Alternatively, you can set your own background for the editor after it is opened by clicking the picture button to the right of the save button on the editor toolbar.

The target editor showing two shapes, with one selected and having tags edited.

In the target editor you can add target regions by clicking one of the shape buttons in the toolbar. With a shape button selected, the shape will surround your cursor when it is over the webcam feed's snapshot. You can move the cursor around to get the shape where you want it and place the shape by clicking the snapshot, thus creating a new region. Click the cursor button on the toolbar to select a region for editing. A selected region is darker than all of the other regions. GIF's and PNG's can be used as target regions. If the GIF contains an animation the animation will play one time when the region is added. Image regions are not darkened or outlined when selected. You can perform the following operations on a selected region:

  • Move the region: use the arrow keys on your keyboard (hold to move faster)
  • Scale the region: hold shift while hitting the arrow keys on your keyboard (hold to scale faster). Images cannot be scaled.
  • Delete the region: hit the delete key on your keyboard
  • Change the color of the region: select a different color from the color drop-down menu on the toolbar
  • Move the region above or below other regions: regions are stacked on top of the snapshot with the most recently added region at the top of the stack. Use the bring forward or send backward buttons on the toolbar to move the selected region up or down one slot in the stack.
  • Tag the region: tags are used to make something interesting happen when the region is hit. Tags are name:value pairs that you can add to a selected region by clicking the tag button on the toolbar, which will open up the Tag Editor popup. Double click the pop to add a new row to create a tag. Once the row is created, double click a cell to fill in a value. Be sure to hit enter after you enter a value otherwise whatever you entered will be lost when you move to another cell or close the popup. Learn more about tags on the Tag Semantics page. If you make use of tags that have actions assigned to them, you should thoroughly test the target before giving it to other people.
  • Tag the target: you can add tags to the overall target by clicking the background image and opening the Tag Editor.

If you are in the arbitrary polygon drawing mode you can add a vertex by left clicking. A temporary line will be drawn between the last vertex you added and your current cursor position to show you where an edge will be drawn if you left click to add another vertex. Hitting ctrl + z will remove the last vertex you added. You complete the polygon you are drawing by right clicking, which will add it as a new region to the target you are drawing. You may only draw regular polygons, which means they must have more than 2 points and they must be a closed shape.

After finishing your new target, be sure to save it with a descriptive name. Targets are automatically added to the Add Target and Edit Target slides as soon as they are saved.
