Maybe not the most eloquent speech, but pretty solid ideas.

Ok, another week, try number two to see if this #happy thing is gonna be a thing.

Let's go backwards. First off, [this article about fall](http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/its-decorative-gourd-season-motherfuckers) linked to me by @smittyhalibut has me rolling in laughter. So good. It caused [me to try out Twitter's new poll thing](https://twitter.com/icco/status/657936870140190721).

The [Longform Podcast](https://longform.org/podcast) continues to be amazing. This week, [their interview of Matthew Shear](https://longform.org/posts/longform-podcast-163-matthew-shaer) was really fascinating talking about Shear's life as a freelancer and how that affects his family life.

So I've been listening to [Reply All](https://gimletmedia.com/show/reply-all/) for a while, and I love it. The show is thoughtful and silly. Often providing insight into interesting parts of the internet I had never heard about.

But with [Episode 36](https://gimletmedia.com/episode/36-todays-the-day/), the show reached a turning point. They seem to be doing stuff now where they start doing research for a show and then just go on weird fucking adventures. [Episode 44](https://gimletmedia.com/episode/44-shine-on-you-crazy-goldman/) was part two in that strain of things. I hope it continues.

Ok, what made me #happy last week:

Drake's [Hotline Bling](http://genius.com/Drake-hotline-bling-lyrics) has been sweeping the internet. @alexbaldwin's [Hotline Bling MEGAMix](https://ruby.fm/alexbaldwin/hotline-bling-megamix) takes this mediocre song and stretches it into an addictive forty minutes. Now I can't stop humming "You used to call me on your cell phone..."

Once you're ready to get the song out of your head, check out @alexbaldwin's other genius creation this week, [Console.FM #15](https://ruby.fm/consolefm/artisan-015). It had me tapping my feet through the entire mix.

Last night I sat down and finally [fixed my blog](https://github.com/icco/natnatnat/pull/7/files). Since Google App Engine removed Golang support from the gcloud binary (their tool for deploying code and interacting with Google Cloud properties from the command line), I haven't been able to deploy updates to my blog. I also haven't been happy with how the app is structured, nor how assets were managed.

So last night I fixed all of the things. I downloaded the Google App Engine Golang SDK, changed my Makefile to actually use it, fixed broken code in [the links page](https://writing.natwelch.com/links) (you'll notice it now actually shows things in order), and switched the asset pipeline from [gulp](http://gulpjs.com/) to [webpack](https://webpack.github.io/).

Webpack, at a very high level, is a tool that evaluates Javascript written in a certain way (basically like [Node](https://nodejs.org/en/) or [React](https://facebook.github.io/react/)) and creates an output file that contains everything you need. It combines CSS, Javascript and images into a single downloadable file that you can distribute.

This week had a lot of really good podcasts making me #happy.

- [Simon Sinek](http://designobserver.com/feature/simon-sinek/39098/) on [Design Matters](http://www.debbiemillman.com/designmatters/). This was a fantastic interview about picking jobs and deciding where to go with your life.
- [How To Make It (Quality)](http://wheretheressmoke.libsyn.com/how-to-make-it-quality) on [Where There's Smoke](http://www.wheretheressmoke.co/) was a great look at defining what is "Quality" and the work that goes into creating something of quality.

- [Chris Sacca](http://foundation.bz/7/) on [Foundation](http://foundation.bz/) is an oldy but goody. My favorite part is @sacca talking about buying datacenters for Google, but the whole thing is pretty interesting.

Outside of Podcasts, I powered through [Armada](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16278318-armada), which I enjoyed, but was a little too sweet for me to recommend. I did start watching [The Man in the High Castle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_in_the_High_Castle_(TV_series)) which has been amazing so far.

On the internet, the video of [Jimmy Fallon, Adele & The Roots Singing "Hello" with Classroom Instruments](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yL7VP4-kP4&feature=youtu.be) is amazing and silly.

And @b0rk's great article on [Why you should understand a little about TCP](http://jvns.ca/blog/2015/11/21/why-you-should-understand-a-little-about-tcp/) is still something I'm sharing around a week later.

Continuing my podcast addiction, ReplyAll's [Quit Already](https://gimletmedia.com/episode/47-quit-already/) was probably the best thing on my normal rotation of podcasts this week. It was a perfect example of why I love the internet: People with similar goals from different walks of life being brought together both online and in person to change the world.

The next thing was Pop Culture Happy Hour's [interview with Trevor Noah](http://www.npr.org/sections/monkeysee/2015/11/27/457375043/pop-culture-happy-hour-a-conversation-with-trevor-noah). I really like PCHH, and while I haven't gotten back in the habit of watching the daily show every day since Stewart left, I do like what Noah has to say. This was an interesting interview, although it covered common ground from some of his other interviews.

Oh, and I found [a talk by Debbie Milman](https://creativemornings.com/podcast/episodes/debbie-millman) that I hadn't heard, and since I love hearing her voice, it made me #happy as well.

[Alex](http://alexkawas.com/) shared this fantastic [article about linguistics and Blink182](http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/i-made-a-linguistics-professor-listen-to-a-blink-182-song-and-analyze-the-accent) which had me humming songs from middle school and thinking about California.

[J\. Cole](https://soundcloud.com/dreamvillerecords/j-cole-black-friday) and [Kendrick Lamar](https://soundcloud.com/topdawgent/kendrick-lamar-black-friday) both released "Black Friday", which were fantastic rap songs to listen to back to back.

In the engineering world, [GitHub's Metal Cloud](http://githubengineering.com/githubs-metal-cloud/) was a cool look into GitHub. This is how you're supposed to do DevOps. Google had a similar system, and as people spend more time in the cloud, you see less about this kind of work, which is a little sad.

I use products by [The North Face](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_North_Face) every day. And while Mr. Tompkins hasn't been running the company since I have been alive, it's cool to see his impact. His Wikipedia article describes him as a "conservationist, outdoorsman, philanthropist, filmmaker, agriculturalist, and businessman." It's pretty inspiring to see someone whose description starts at conservationist and ends at businessman, because this makes me think of the positive influence he has had on the world.
