NetReg/NetMon was designed from the ground-up at Carnegie Mellon to be a very flexible, lightweight system for management and centralization of network parameters. The goal is to automate much of the machine registration and configuration information, while allowing a high degree of control by users. We wanted to minimize the overhead in maintaining the registration system, and streamline the management of the network, to maximize the time available to solve better problems.

NetReg/NetMon was designed to be flexible and adaptable to individual environments. However, you are working with the first public release. We expect that there will be some hard-coded information that makes absolutely no sense in your environment. We've tried to minimize this and extract the main bits that need to change into certain configuration files (ie CMU/Netdb/config.pm, CMU/WebInt/config.pm, CMU/NetMon/Config.pm), but you are warned.
We would appreciate receiving a summary of your experience installing NetReg, and appreciate comments, suggestions, or patches. :) Please see the Contacting Us section for more information.

NetReg/NetMon is a collection of Perl modules and scripts. There are two main trees the modules are organized under: CMU and DNS. Throughout this manual we may refer to CMU::Module or DNS::Module, which, following the Perl structure, means that the actual file being discussed is in lib/CMU/Module.pm.
##1.4 Contacting Us/Downloading Software ###1.4.1 Homepage The canonical source for NetReg/NetMon source is: http://www.net.cmu.edu/netreg.
NetReg/NetMon is maintained in CVS, and you can grab the latest version through anonymous CVS access. Our policy on updating files to the HEAD of the CVS tree is that they should be at least minimally tested. Extensive long-term development generally happens on a branch. However, this is not an absolute guarantee that the CVS tree will be completely functional at any given time.
Further, please note that the default path to 'perl' we use is /usr/local/bin/perl5, due to local installation details. In many cases you will need to change files ending in .pl to your path.
To check out the tree from our anonymous CVS server, run the commands below. Note that you will get a few warnings about "Permission Denied" while accessing certain files. These files are not yet available for public distribution, but your checkout should not be affected.
cvs -d :pserver:[email protected]:/cvs login (enter "anonymous" as the password) cvs -d :pserver:[email protected]:/cvs co -d netdb src/netdb
###1.4.2 Bugs If you have a bug, patch, question, comment, or suggestion, please send them to: [email protected]. We also have a bugzilla server for bug tracking. It's at: bugzilla.andrew.cmu.edu.
