Good for understanding:

  • who is using the site
  • how they are using the site

Can be done with a plugin or by editing .php files.

Need a non-free account for this.

Is there an immediate charge associated with gathering analytics? Money Positive uses google analytics and I wasn't aware we were paying for it; we have an account which can be billed for services but I think we have fallen under their free tier for everything except email services.

I need to update this issue. The information about costs is specifically applicable only to WordPress sites. There you can't use Plugins without a paid account. With GitHub Pages, Google Analytics is free to my knowledge.
