By default, Aether will do a callbook lookup anytime you enter a callsign and hit return. This behavior can be configured by changing the "Automatically Lookup Callbook Info" setting in [Aether 's Logging Preferences](preferences/loggingpreferences.md).

Regardless of this setting, you can always manually initiate a callbook lookup of the selected QSO(s) by choosing "Lookup Callsign Data" from the Log menu, or by pressing command-L.

1. Select the QSOs for which you want to lookup callbook data in the QSO table. You can do this by shift clicking on a range of QSOs, or by command clicking on the QSOs you want to select. If you want to do callbook lookup for all QSOs in your log, you can select one, then do Edit->Select All (or press command-A).
2. Choose "Lookup Callsign Data" from the Log menu, or press command-L. Aether will begin looking up callbook data for all the selected QSOs, and will show a progress bar while it does so.

## Overview

This page includes troubleshooting information for Aether's callbook lookup feature. This page is a work in progress.

## QRZ.com Subscription Lookups

If you're using a paid QRZ.com subscription for callbook lookups, the first thing to check is that Aether is able to log in to your QRZ.com XML account. See the instructions for setting up QRZ.com XML lookups [here](/callbooklookup/callbooklookup/#configuring-qrzcom-xml-lookups). In particular, make sure the login test in steps 7 and 8 works. If you see "Failed", the most common problem is that your username and password is incorrect. Double check that they work by logging into QRZ.com's [subscriber test page](http://xmldata.qrz.com/xcheck). If you are unable to log in there, please contact QRZ.com's [support](https://forums.qrz.com/support). If you _are_ able to log in to QRZ.com's account test page, but are still unable to login using Aether, contact [Aether support](https://www.aetherlog.com/contact.html).

## More Help

As always, if you have a problem that isn't fixed by the suggestions here, or have further questions, please feel free to contact [Aether support](https://www.aetherlog.com/contact.html).

## Logging your first QSO

Now you're ready to log your first QSO! Make sure the cursor is in the callsign field in the top left corner of the window. Enter the callsign of the station you're working, and press the return key. If you entered a valid US callsign, you should see callbook information for that callsign automatically fill in the Callbook Info section on the right hand side of the window. Don't worry if you don't see this, as callbook lookup may require [more set up](callbooklookup.md).

If you'd like, continue filling in additional info for the QSO. A quick note: unless you're logging QSOs made in a contest, you can leave the TX Exch. and RX Exch. fields blank. Find more information about those fields [here](/contesting/txrxexch.md).

#### Callbook Info

When this option is enabled, Aether will automatically lookup callbook info for the entered callsign as soon as you hit the return key or tab away from the callsign field. By default, this option is **enabled**. This lookup is done online, and requires an active internet connection. Callbook lookup is a larger topic, and more information can be found in the [Callbook Lookup Guide](/callbooklookup.md). Note that you can always manually do a callbook lookup for the selected QSO(s) by choosing "Lookup Callsign Data" from the Log menu, or by pressing command-L.
