The Keccak algorithm, otherwise known as SHA-3, is a "sponge-constructed" hashing algorithm designed to act as an alternative to the popular SHA-256. Keccak was chosen as the winner of a 5-year competition held by the NIST in which notable cryptographers submitted their algorithms.

Within MaxCoin, the 256-bit variant of the algorithm is used.
