Rolf Reichle edited this page Jan 27, 2021 · 1 revision

Up-to-date version of (README.md) is on the develop branch. In this file you will find steps on how to create resource files from ldas_setup, in this case YOUR_expinp.txt file.

  ./ldas_setup sample –-exeinp> YOUR_exeinp.txt

Edit this sample file following the examples and comments here or within the sample file.

Required Experiment Information example:

Restart Info

RESTART : 0 (Cold start from arbitrary some old restart.)
#RESTART_ID : SMAP_Nature_v4.1
#RESTART_PATH : /discover/nobackup/users/MERRA3/SMAP_Nature_v4.1/
#RESTART_DOMAIN : SMAP_EASEv2_M36_GLOBAL

Other RESTART options:

Use one of the following options if you have a GEOSldas- or LDASsa-produced restart file:

RESTART: 1

  • YES, have restart file from GEOSldas or LDASsa in SAME tile space (grid) with SAME boundary conditions and SAME snow model parameter (WEMIN).
  • GEOSldas-produced restart can be for the same or a larger domain.
  • LDASsa-produced restart must be for the GLOBAL domain.

RESTART: 2

  • YES, have restart file from GEOSldas or LDASsa but in a DIFFERENT tile space (grid) or with DIFFERENT boundary conditions or DIFFERENT snow model parameter (WEMIN).
  • Restart must be for the GLOBAL domain.

Use one of the following options if you DO NOT have a GEOSldas- or LDASsa-produced restart file:

RESTART: 0

  • Cold start from arbitrary some old restart.

RESTART: M

  • Re-tile from archived MERRA-2 restart file.

RESTART: F

  • Re-tile from FP (Forward Processing) restart file.

RESTART: G

  • Re-tile from any AGCM catch[cn]_internal_rst file.

Specify experiment ID/location of restart file:

For RESTART=1 or RESTART=2:

  • Specify RESTART_ID, RESTART_PATH, RESTART_DOMAIN with restarts stored as follows: RESTART_PATH/RESTART_ID/output/RESTART_DOMAIN/rs/

For RESTART=0 or RESTART=M or RESTART=F:

  • There is no need to specify RESTART_ID, RESTART_PATH, and RESTART_DOMAIN.

For RESTART=G:

  • RESTART_ID : full_path_to_AGCM_experiment_directory
  • RESTART_PATH : full_path_of_the_AGCM_restart_file
  • RESTART_DOMAIN is NOT required.

IMPORTANT:
Except for RESTART=1, SPIN-UP is REQUIRED in almost the cases.

Meteorological Forcings

More information about met forcing and boundary conditions for GEOSldas can be found in (README.metforcing_and_bcs.md).

MET_TAG : M2COR_cross
MET_PATH : /discover/nobackup/projects/gmao/merra/iau/merra_land/MERRA2_land_forcing/
FORCE_DTSTEP : 3600

Land Boundary Conditions Directory

BCS_PATH : /discover/nobackup/ltakacs/bcs/Icarus-NLv3/Icarus-NLv3_EASE/SMAP_EASEv2_M36/

Coupling of LDAS to ADAS (LADAS)

LADAS COUPLING : 0
  • 0 -- LDAS is not coupled with ADAS (default)
  • 1 -- LDAS is coupled with ADAS ${ADAS_exp}

GEOSldas Parameters

Using Catchment/CatchmentCN offline, DEFAULT is:

CATCHMENT_OFFLINE : 1

Choice of land surface model, Catchment is DEFAULT, LSM_CHOICE : 2 for CatchmentCN model

LSM_CHOICE : 1

Domain definition (specify extremities of lat/lon rectangle):

MINLON :-180.
MAXLON : 180.
MINLAT : -90.
MAXLAT : 90.

Surface meteorological forcing: Horizonal interpolation:

MET_HINTERP : 1
  • 1 -- bilinear interpolation (default)
  • 0 -- nearest neighbor

Specify if running model only or data assimilation:

LAND_ASSIM : NO
  • NO -- model only (DEFAULT; with --runmodel option)
  • YES -- assimilation (without --runmodel option)

Version of assorted Catchment/snow model parameters:

LAND_PARAMS : NRv7.2

NOTE: Beginning with GEOSldas_m4-17_7, LAND_PARAMS replaces the LAND_UPD compiler flag of earlier tags.

Job segments Length:

  • Specify period between output of restart files. Default is the entire simulation period (END_DATE minus BEG_DATE). Format: yyyymmdd hhmmss

JOB_SGMT : 00000100 000000

Job segments Number:

  • One lenkf.j job simulates NUM_SGMTJOB_SGMT time, then re-submits itself, so (NUM_SGMTJOB_SGMT) should be done within the 12 hour CPU time limit (at NCCS). Low values for NUM_SGMT are recommended for run-time and storage efficiency. Default is 1.

NUM_SGMT : 12

Some of the other options:

PERTURBATIONS : 0 (Perturbations: On/off)
FIRST_ENS_ID : 0 (Perturbations: ID of first ensemble member)
LDAS_logit : YES (Output: Write log file YES/NO)

Do not change the following parameters in GEOSldas:

DYCORE : none (No dycore for offline)
MAPL_ENABLE_BOOTSTRAP : YES (For MAPL_RestartOptional)

CATCH_INTERNAL_CHECKPOINT_TYPE : pnc4
SURFLAY : 50.0 (SURFLAY)

In resource file for surface parameters, jointly used by the GCM and GEOSldas. Many of the parameter options described in YOUR_expinp.txt may NOT work as intended, or at all. Choosing values other than the suggested defaults is NOT recommended for general users.

Other availabe options can be found for:

  • GOSWIM aerosol deposition on surface snow
  • Irrigation model
  • River routing model (RRM)
  • CatchCN-specific parameters
