Changes

  • Remove patches reducing the wildness values of the warg, wolves, and bears.

Reasoning

Noticed these patches while looking over the warg's combat stats, and found that they were done by NIA about 5 years ago (on the old CE) and haven't been changed since. I couldn't find any specific reasoning, but I'd suspect it was intended to make them more effective as combat animals by allowing the player to keep more of them.

Removed them because, broadly speaking, I'm of a mind that CE shouldn't change basic stats in vanilla or shift balance more than is really necessary. In this case, we create the strange situation where a warg is more tame than a horse. One could argue, "genetic tailoring to be easier to train, blah blah," but it strikes me as a violation of common sense than the roided out space velvet hippo is easier to train than livestock. Similar stories for the wolf and bear.

While removing this patch does make it slightly more expensive in time and food for the player to upkeep wargs, wolves, and bears, the difference isn't so substantial as to dramatically shift the balance of combat animals; even if we say it represents a 20% increase in the upkeep of a group of tamed combat animals, the player either has enough resources and trainers that it doesn't materially degrade their ability to maintain their pack, or they've got so few combat animals that keeping 1 or 2 less doesn't ultimately matter.

Alternatives

  • Could leave as-is.
  • Could do a broader reduction of wildness via patching to compensate for comparatively higher animal mortality rates in CE.
    • A lot of added work to implement and then ongoing work to include in new patches.
    • Only benefits the player.
    • Is unlikely to dramatically shift the balance of shifting combat animals.

Testing

Check tests you have performed:

  • Compiles without warnings
  • Game runs without errors
  • (For compatibility patches) ...with and without patched mod loaded
  • Playtested a colony (specify how long)
