This page provides brief instructions on using the OnlyV Bible text image software. It runs on Windows 10 and requires .NET framework 4.7
Download and run the OnlyVSetup.exe file. OnlyV doesn't install system DLLs, register files or otherwise mess with your system. When installation is complete, run OnlyV from the desktop shortcut or Windows Start menu.
When you run OnlyV for the first time, you will be prompted to download a Bible epub file from jw.org and drag and drop it onto the application window. You should be able to use most languages and either the old or new edition.
This section describes each of the settings in detail. Note that I try to keep the documentation up-to-date and it may at times refer to functions or settings that are only available in a pre-release version of the software.
Bibles => Bible epub file - OnlyV lists all of the Bible epub files that you have downloaded. Select the one you want to use. Note that the changes are applied immediately which means that if you are displaying an image, the text will be updated as soon as a new epub file is selected.
Display => Media monitor - OnlyV lists all of the display devices attached to your PC. Select the one you want to display the images on.
Display => JW Library compatibility mode - If checked, OnlyV will attempt to cooperate with the JW Library app (and JW Library Sign Language app) over use of the media display. If you use this mode it's recommended that you have a plain black Windows desktop on the media monitor.
Please also see JwMediaWin which offers a better solution to the interoperation between JW Library and other media applications like OnlyV.
Image Style => Theme - Select from a list of available themes (currently a rather limited selection). An OnlyV theme determines image properties such as typeface, colour, background image, etc. It is possible to create your own themes using the OnlyV Theme Creator tool.
Tip - Go to the Preview page and click the Display button to display your image before you select a theme. This allows you to preview the theme.
Image Style => Text scaling - Use the slider to override the size of the text that is specified in the theme. Use the RESET button to reset the scaling to 100% so that the text size is as designed in the theme.
Image Style => Use background image - If checked, this setting will override that specified in the theme. Has no effect if the theme doesn't include a background image.
Image Style => Auto fit - If checked, OnlyV will make small adjustments to font size and/or margins to prevent small amounts of 'orphaned' text.
Image Style => Use ellipses to indicate non-contiguous verses - If checked, OnlyV inserts an ellipsis between non-contiguous verses. For example if you have chosen to display verses 1-5 and verse 7, an ellipsis is shown between the end of verse 5 and the start of verse 7.
Image Style => Show a tilde between paragraphs in a single verse - If checked, OnlyV inserts a tilde character between paragraphs when a single verse contains multiple paragraphs. This typically occurs in sections of poetry or songs (e.g. in the Psalms).
Image Style => Trim punctuation - If checked, OnlyV removes any punctuation marks from the end of the text.
Image Style => Trim quotation marks - If checked, OnlyV attempts to remove orphaned quotation marks from the text. For example, if a quotation begins in a preceeding verse but concludes at the end of the selected verses, OnlyV will remove the extraneous quotation mark.
Image Style => Show verse numbers - If checked, verse numbers are shown as superscript text.
Miscellaneous => Main window always on top - If checked, the OnlyV window remains on top of others. Note that OnlyV automatically remains on top when media is being displayed.
Miscellaneous => Allow verse editing - If checked, the OnlyV preview window displays an edit button which allows you to modify the text of the chosen verses. This is typically used to abbreviate a verse (e.g. to replace some of the text with an ellipsis).
Miscellaneous => Logging Level - This refers to the level of detail that is recorded in the OnlyV log files. The levels appear in order of descending verbosity. The default value is "Information". It's important that you DO NOT set the level to Debug or Verbose unless investigating a problem. The log files are stored in "Documents\OnlyV\Logs".
You can specify the "/id=" command-line option to include a unique identifier when storing settings. For example, if you append "/id=Warwick" (without the quotation marks) to the target of an OnlyV desktop shortcut and then launch the program, your settings will be specific to the "Warwick" shortcut.
The "--nogpu" switch can be specified if you want to disable all hardware graphics acceleration for the OnlyV application. This should only be used if the main window does not render properly (very occasionally a graphics device driver is incompatible with Microsoft WPF applications).
The "--nosettings" switch can be specified if you want to hide the "Settings" button
OnlyV maintains a log (a simple text file) of activity which can be useful if you run into problems. The log is stored in the "Documents\OnlyV\Logs" folder.
If you need help, have a question or suggestion, or want to report a bug please do so in the Issues page (use the New issue button and follow the instructions). Note that all of the issues are in the public domain and the correspondence is permanent and searchable.
