Functions can often reduce clutter, typos copy&paste behavior in format files e.g. XML-styled formats:

START = "<tag>" (1 | 2 | 3) "</tag>"

could be reduced to (syntax has to be discussed first)

START = xml_element("tag", (1 | 2 | 3))
