Born in St. Thomas (in what is now the U.S. Virgin Islands) in 1876, Arthur Leslie Howard attended Cooke College in Antigua before coming to Yale. He graduated from the School of Medicine in 1897. As a student, he roomed with William Fletcher Penn (MD, 1897). After graduation, Howard moved to England, where he worked at the Liverpool East Dispensary for several months. Due to health issues, Howard relocated to Vroncysylite, Wales, but he died in 1904 at the age of 28.
