I will once again be teaching a 4-week online course for librarians on patent
searching in August. For those who don't know me, I am a Science & Engineering Librarian at the University of Maine, Orono, and serve as Maine’s only representative to the Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC), a program administered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. A full
description of my "Patent Searching for Librarians" course can be seen at:
This course is designed specifically for entry-level science and engineering
librarians and general reference librarians. Students will learn the anatomy of
a patent and how patents are organized. A variety of search strategies will be
discussed, and several freely available databases will be utilized. Guidelines
for avoiding "unauthorized practice of law," a concern often inhibiting
librarians from providing effective services to their users, will also be
provided. This 4-week course is worth 1.5 CEUs and the fee is $175.
Please share widely with your colleagues. I'm happy to answer any questions
about the course.
