Sorry for the newbie question. Is map visualization like the following supported?

I don't think you can do that with vegas.

My understanding is that this library is wrapper/fascade around Vega-Lite rather than Vega itself. Vega-Lite only lets you do a small support of what vega does (but in an easier/more concise way).

Vega lite 2.x may support this in the future (looking like after 2.0, possibly 2.1):
