find financial sustainability #7

See Bundler, another open-source project, for a successful example of this: https://www.gittip.com/bundler/ & http://bundler.io/ Note they are using the fund to support developers, not simply cover ongoing costs.

Gittip itself is also funded this way: https://www.gittip.com/Gittip/ And they clearly document all their ongoing costs: http://building.gittip.com/appendices/finances (particularly the second page) |
Really like the way the free JS book Eloquent JavaScript presents their backer page: http://eloquentjavascript.net/backers.html
Logo/Name, Amount, Custom Message |
Agreed. I also love how they included the currency; shows a more global scope. |
Financial goal is to be able to sustain all the ongoing costs.
Particularly at this point this is server fees, which is around $100 a month for the AWS x3.large . Of course there are other expenses that could come in down the road.
One promising option is to solicit recurring "tips" using Gittip: https://www.gittip.com/Letsfix/ . This provides more of a stable & predictable source of income than periodic donations, and can be more widely supported through micropayments to split the burden among sponsors.
