im using an apple silicon based mac, and the version i was using was 92.0.4515.131-1

wow, that's a really old version, the patch mentioned was added around version 96.x. Try updating with this: https://github.com/kramred/ungoogled-chromium-macos/releases

There are releases for arm and x86 macs

you need this flag --disable-top-sites
or in chrome://flags/ search for Custom New Tab Page
and set like this file:///C:/Chromium/Extension/Tabs/blank.htm
