One of the stakeholders asked in the 2/20 demo for the feasibility about providing "cross-references" for certain terms that might appear in queries, for example:

  • FALINTIL = Forças Armadas de Libertação Nacional De Timor Leste = Armed Forces for the Liberation of East Timor
  • UNTAET = United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor

My understanding is that this would be desirable potentially for both full-text discovery searching and content search. Work on this ticket should address the feasibility of this work. I recognize the potential complexity given the issue of introducing synonyms for an index shared with documents other than those for the VT East Timor materials.

Needs more analysis.

The goal is to associate abbreviations, alternate scripts/languages, etc. with multiple terms. Examples:

  • ICTY may have names (or terms) in both Latin script or Cyrillic script (or English and Serbo-Croatian)
  • Acronyms are a major issue in particular
  • Ideally we could also do this for misspellings as well
  • This also ties into identification of concepts: e.g. United States of America is not (just) a 4-word phrase, it's a concept

We'll keep this open, but this is out of scope for the current workcycle.
