It would be very useful to have a cpu temperature applet for BD.

It should just be something simple like showing "45 C".

I read there are plans for AppIndicator support: does that mean Ubuntu only?

Some people might want a more detailed System Monitor applet too.

What library would we be best using for this out of interest?

Also for AppIndicator the support will be for all supporting distributions, however the issue I have is that
libdbus-menu seems ... somewhat lacking in terms of maintenance..

There is a nice indicator-sensors utility, which can display temperatures from various sensors (CPU, hard disk, video card, etc.), see
https://launchpad.net/indicator-sensors
Also there is an extension for GNOME-Shell:

We believe this functionality should be implemented "out of tree" (external to Budgie core) by the community.

A "wanted widgets" section on the Budgie website may provide an entry point for individuals to get involved in expanding the ecosystem. Filed an issue at solus-project/budgie-site#8 and I'll be aggregating items for "out of tree" there.
