I noticed there are lots of forks but not many merges in recent months and years.

It seems the project is still important to many people, myself included.

Anyone able to shed light on the maintainer-ship and future direction of the project?

I was about to fork it to provide a pull request and came to the same conclusion by looking at the repo.

There are lots of forks of this project, (visible here), so it seems it's still valuable and interesting to plenty of people.

What's lacking is a centralizing repo and a person operating in a Maintainer role.
If anyone if interested in taking up that role, please mention your repo and a short description of your plans to this issue, and we'll seek to coordinate some sort of transition here in this issue.
