I work on manipulation. My goal is to enable robots to robustly and gracefully interact with the world to perform complex manipulation tasks in uncertain, unstructured, and cluttered environments. I want to make this interaction faster, safer, elegant, and involve simpler actuation. To this end, I founded the Personal Robotics Lab in 2005. I have led several large initiatives including the Quality of Life Technologies NSF ERC, DARPA ARM-S and the CMU CHIMP team on the DARPA DRC.

My theoretical research focusses on two topics: Physics-based Manipulation and The Mathematics of Human-Robot Interaction. They are heavily intertwined, both born out of the goal of robots performing complex manipulation tasks with and around people.

I am a full-stack roboticist, passionate about building end-to-end systems (HERB, ADA, HRP3, CHIMP, Andy, among others) that integrate perception, planning, and control in the real world. My work has enabled novel motor controllers (the Open WAM Driver), hardware (the Perception Palm for Barrett Technologies), simulation frameworks (OpenRAVE, AIKIDO) and dense 3D modeling (CHISEL, now used by Google Project Tango).

I am also a competitive runner, captained CMU's AB squash team, and played tennis and badminton for IIT Madras.
