Following some of the issues previously noted that were encountered (#26, #27), and that other projects are starting to depend on this software in a fairly crucial manner, I think it would be good to start a test suite and refactor the code in a more piece-wise manner such that it can be tested. This issue will be a for a high level plan/discussion, and subsequent child issues will be made to tackle smaller pieces.

Now that I understand the new "Relationships" and sub-issues feature in GitHub, I removed the checklist in the initial issue description since they are redundant to the subissues list
