Backport merge_imports from 2.0 #6451

The 2.0.0 branch contains an option merge_imports.

As it seems that 2.0.0 will never be released. I'd love to see merge_imports as part of 1.0.

Sorry for the noise. It looks like this is part of 1.x. But it didn't show up in the docs the way I searched for it. Using the term "nested":
