this was captured using a gameboy player. a gamboy player just is a gba using passthroughs for input and output

I think that OAM bug was fixed in gba hardware, that is why you cannot reproduce the test.

@bobonis is right, per https://gbdev.gg8.se/wiki/articles/Sprite_RAM_Bug this is fixed in later models:
Game Boy Color and Advance are not affected by this bug.
It passes when I run it on my DMG + EverDrive:
