I get some stutter when I play 144p video very fast in p-i-p mode in Newpipe, maybe would with PowerTube too, and am multitasking on the phone. 72p would save bandwidth too, around 30GB /month, and video would load faster in areas with weak internet connection and it would still look good if pip window is small, like half the phone's width. Can you enable 72p download or does Youtube first have to make available 72p version of its videos?
