textcounter is used on our site and works well - thank you! We have encountered the following issues:

Garbled announcements by Voiceover, particularly on MacOS
When a screen reader interacts with a field, they have no way of determining that there is counter text associated to that field. They will hear the text when reading the page in general but not when investigating the control.

I forked the project to make the changes to our site - the PR in case you would like to integrate them into the main trunk: #54
