Support for references/bibliography/citations plugin

It could be quite useful to add support for some citation plugins, such as:
https://github.com/martinring/markdown-it-citations, or
https://github.com/DerDrodt/markdown-it-bibliography

I am new to VS Code extensions so not sure how difficult it would be. I did not find any attempt to do it in the marketplace, so there are possibly some tricky things.
But it's necessary for academic note-taking and I am currently using the pandoc-parser from MPE to add citations. An extension that incorporates the citation feature into markdown-it parser will be very helpful!
