How does one get raw borax without green science?

I need borax to create the second tier of science packs. The technology to mine it from reserves needs those science packs. FNEI says the only other way to obtain raw borax is syngas, but if you click on it there's no syngas recipe that produces raw borax that I can use with just red science. Does anyone know what I'm missing?

There are patches of normal borax ore (so not the big single mines) that you can mine with the same miners you use for quartz. It requires syngas as a mining fluid.
