Important topic: Max age

This is referenced in #7 but I want to pull out this topic for a clearer documentation. Here are notes Ive had in the past about the values for max age (and therefore values for M).

• 95 yrs - Yamanaka and Lacko 2001: Provides the highest estimate of max age (95 for female). Based on samples from southern BC. Cited by Palsson et al. 2009, Love et al. 2002, and COSEWIC et al. 2009. The COSEWIC document is for southern Canada and includes a figure of all the age data. Looks like next oldest female is around 75. Oldest male is 80.
• 90 yrs - Munk 2001: Southeast alaska provides the next highest. This is cited by Cailliet et al. 2001 as pers comm, and then by Kerr et al. 2003, both of which are age validation studies.
• support for 43-90 - Kerr et al. 2003: Age validation study. Does not cite Yamanaka and Lacko (2001) so highest previous estimate was 90. Study supports age estimates above 43, up to 90.
• 76 yrs - Yamanaka and Kronlund 1997: Nearshore assessment document for southern BC - No electronic copy available.
• 73 yrs - Palsson et al. 2009: puget sound study using break and burn
• 55 yrs - Richards and Cass 1986: southern BC using break and burn. Few samples aged.
• 38 yrs - Barker 1979: puget sound dissertation using surface reads
• 15 yrs - Reilley et al. 1994: Recreational fishing guide leaflet for California
