In http://orientdb.com/docs/last/Tutorial-Installation.html# it is helpful to mention, that you need a 64bit Java installation to have the bin/server directory needed for the OrientDB installation.
Also with the windows service installation with Apache Commons only the 64bit JRE worked for me.
