Is there a script interface so we can pre-process subtitles?

For some obscure reason, I want to alter the subtitles (ass in mkv) via a script.

I found sub-text and stuff but they are read only.

The only way I could think of would be demux the subtitle, modify it, load it back in, it should work, but I don't want to go that route if there's a better way, so I'm asking :)
