Hello,

You are receiving this message because you have one or more Amazon RDS PostgreSQL version 9.4 database instances as of March 28, 2020, that require attention in the US-WEST-2 Region. For these database instances, you need to upgrade to Amazon RDS PostgreSQL version 9.5 or greater by April 20, 2020. See ‘Recommendations’ Tab and then ‘Deprecated major versions’ tab in your RDS console for a list of Database instances.

As stated in the correspondence we sent on August 5, 2019, Amazon RDS aligns with the PostgreSQL community support model [1], and will discontinue support for PostgreSQL version 9.4, starting on April 20, 2020.

As a best practice, we recommend that you complete your upgrade to PostgreSQL version 11 prior to April 13, 2020 to leave time for your own testing. If you prefer, you can also upgrade to PostgreSQL version 9.5 or higher. You can initiate an upgrade by going to the Modify DB Instance page in the AWS Management Console and change the database version setting to a newer major version of PostgreSQL. The upgrade process will shutdown the database instance, perform the upgrade, and restart the database instance again. Restarts of the database instance may occur multiple times during the process. If you choose the “Apply Immediately” option, the upgrade will be initiated immediately after exiting the Modify page. If you choose not to apply the change immediately, the upgrade will be performed during your next maintenance window. To learn more about upgrading PostgreSQL major versions in RDS, review the Upgrading Database Versions page [2].

As part of an effort to upgrade all customers to community supported versions of PostgreSQL, on February 15th 2020 we disabled the creation of new PostgreSQL 9.4 instances using the AWS console. You can continue to restore your PostgreSQL 9.4 snapshots as well as create read replicas with 9.4 instances until the April 20, 2020 end of support date. During your first maintenance window following April 20, 2020, we will perform automated upgrades of any remaining RDS PostgreSQL 9.4 instances to PostgreSQL version 11. If we are not able to upgrade to PostgreSQL version 11 for any reason, we will instead upgrade to PostgreSQL version 9.5.

After April 20, 2020, restoring the snapshot of a RDS PostgreSQL 9.4 database instance will result in an automatic version upgrade of the restored database instance using the same upgrade process as described above.

Your affected PostgreSQL 9.4 instances in the US-WEST-2 Region are listed below:

To learn more about Amazon RDS' policy for supporting database versions, please see the Amazon RDS FAQs [3] and search for "guidelines for deprecating database engine versions". Should you have any questions or concerns, the AWS Support Team is available on the community forums and via Premium Support [4].
