cant seem to edit my town anymore?

i think it has something to do with the 3ds update that happened in november, and it soft bricked everyone’s ds’es and we all had to replace a file or something. after i did all that jazz, i extracted my save data for new leaf, did the usual stuff to hack my town, edited my town (the changes were nothing big, too, just a few trees here and there.) i saved the changes and put my sd card back in my 3ds.
this time, when i tried to turn it on, it wouldn’t turn on. i cant remember if it was simply a black screen or a “an exception occured” message. either way it wouldn’t boot. so i put my sd card back in my laptop and replaced the current, hacked garden.dat file with the old one i had before i made those changes (i always make a copy of the current before i hack). i put the sd card in my ds and low and behold it turned on and everything worked fine.
a few days later i tried again and same thing etc. etc. sorry for a bit of a ramble but i wanted to get all the details in 😅 is there something wrong with my ds, or is the save editor outdated??

The save editor shouldn't be the problem, it works with the latest version of ACNL. On ACNL main menu, does it say "v1.5" in the top right corner of the bottom screen? It should. If not, update ACNL. I only say this because you mentioned a "garden.dat" when ACNL v1.5 uses garden_plus.dat. But still, this is, if any, a strange reason for your console not to boot. If the problem insists, and you want trees all that badly, I'd recommend using RedShyGuy's ACNL Plugin. It has a seeder, and a lot of other cool hacks. (A seeder can place trees.) Also an acre editor.
