This is more a collection of notes than an action item. Japanese has been put on hold due to low demand and high implementation effort.

Transliteration via Aksharamukha has been tested and deemed not accurate enough to be usable.

Some specialized tools are available:

Cutlet would be the preferred choice from a software architecture standpoint because it's available as a Python module. Reportedly has some limitations and inaccuracies.
Kuroshiro has not been tested. It is NodeJS-based, so implementation would be a bit trickier as SS is currently pure Python.
Other open source libraries can be explored.
