I know this is primarily a MATE Theme, but could it be possible to support XFWM4 for this theme?

Have you tried this one?

Pull requests are welcome to add window decorations support for XFCE's XFWM4.

hmm, this is okay, i guess, kinda wished the close button was green (or multiple colors to go with the colored variant of ambiant-MATE)

Great find, though!

You could copy and paste the close button PNGs from the coloured variant's metacity-1 theme to the xfwm4 folder of the other theme (renamed as appropriate). That might work assuming they're the same height/width.

is there a method to preview metacity themes on XFCE? that might help out.

I don't think that's possible. You could change your window manager to marco (MATE, originally a fork from metacity) if you just want the window decorations from this theme to just work.
