Goal

In outdoor environments, create a high quality (possibly long distance) bridge to the school WiFi network and create a local hotspot for DIY production.

Components

Ubiquiti NanoStation M (NSM2 US)

Ubiquiti airGateway LR (AirGateway-LR)

NanoStation M is a wireless CPE with an integrated high gain directional antenna. This will serve wireless connect to the wireless school network backbone. It also provides two local network ports for providing Ethernet connectivity.

airGateway LR connects to NanoStation M and provides a local WiFi hotspot.

This arrangement differs from the Engenius solution in that, two separate antennas (and equipment) gets used. A directed antennna (NanoStation M) to connect to the backend and a local router (airGateway) with omnidirectional for local access.

Setup

Here are snapshots for setup of the NanoStation M.

Steps

1. Ubiquiti (Main port) -> Ubiquiti Injector - POE Port. Ubiquiti Injector - LAN Port -> Laptop

2. Set laptop to static IP 192.168.1.10

3. Connect via browser using 192.168.1.20

4. After the initial login (ubnt/ubnt).

5. Go to the Wireless Tab

6. Keep the Wireless Mode to default as 'Station'

7. Click 'Select' on the SSID field. This will open up the wireless survey page as follows.

8. Select the backend School's WiFi access point

9. On the top right of the page - perform Test and Accept

10. This will bring you back to the wireless tab

11. Put in school's wireless access credentials

12. Save and you are good to go.

13. Set your laptop back to DHCP.

14. Validate network connectivity

NanoStation can be interfaced with AirGateway-LR from Ubiquiti to create a local hotspot.

AirGateway-LR acts as a local router that can receive WAN connection either through a NanoStation connected on its POE port or a wired internet connected on its POE port via a POE splitter.

Configuration of the AirGateway in either setup

Ensure the wireless mode is set to 'Access Point'.

Setup the wireless SSID and Wireless Security credentials

I have verified that the airGateway operates as a local hotspot, even if there is NO WAN connection.
