New Authagraph map works well if all corners are in the ocean #6
Comments
well, the North pole is in water. there's a limit to how far you can put the corners from land if you want the border of the map to be rectangular and not cut thru any landmasses. that sed, my preferd arrangement of the tetrahedral map projections is to move the North Pole corner into the northern Pacific ocean (you can produce this in the program if you choose the Lee Tetrahedral projection and select the "Tetrahedral" aspect preset). like you say, this puts all four corners farther into the ocean, which distorts Siberia less. but it also cuts Antarctica in two and separates New Zealand from Australia, which I believe is the reason Hajime Narukawa did not do this for the AuthaGraph. |
Maybe you can find better corners if you would use an uneven tetrahedron? |
That's a pretty good idea. I haven't considered that. I'm pretty busy with other projects rite now, but I'll look into that the next time I get around to working on map projections. |
did you find the time to have a look at this? |
I have not, unfortunately. My project backlog is pretty long right now and this is pretty low down on it. |
I think you could create an even better map, if you position all the 4 corners of the tetrahedron in water. There is no need to put one corner at the North pole, which distorts Siberia quite strong
