[UI] Improve handling of failed loads

Given: An existing document successfully loaded
When: Loading a document with a parsing or loading error
Then: Loading wheel stops spinning
And: Displays the previous document

Currently, the loading wheel spins forever (?!) and the screen shows blank.

We should ensure parsing and loading worked before overwriting the currently-good document.
