The bug

As shown in the image, all the covers appear like this. I’ve tried both the buffaol_m and antelopev2 models. The original images are in RAW format, taken with a Nikon Zf camera. However, when I click on the covers, the images display normally. Initially, some of the original images also displayed abnormally in the Photos list, but after selecting “Prefer embedded preview,” they appeared normal. However, the covers are still abnormal.

I think selecting a new featured photo for each person should fix that. So would regenerating all the thumbnails, but depending on how many assets you've got that might be more than you'd like.

@bo0tzz There is no option to select a cover photo. Originally, it was the antelopev2 model, but even after I switched to buffaol_m and reset the face detection, it still didn’t work.

Yes there is, in the top-right menu when viewing a person.

@Danfi There should be this option, you click it, and then click the photo that you want to set as cover/featured.

@bo0tzz I selected one of the normal images, but it still generated an incorrect cover.

Can you share a file that this happens to in a zip?

Interestingly when opening this file with the default Windows 11 image viewer the image first displays correctly, and after about a second it turns into the corrupted version that you're experencing. Other image editing software like pain(.)net are not able to open it altogheter. I would guess that the issue is with the files or the format themselves and not immich

Yes, RAW files can be quite a hassle to display correctly, as there are so many different formats for different cameras, not all of them cross-compatible with one another.

This is why I always edit the photos in Lightroom, export them as JPG, and then import them into Immich, or if I don't intend to edit them, I just shoot JPG. It doesn't make much sense to upload RAW files to Immich as it has no RAW editing capabilities.

image When this option is enabled, the thumbnails in the image list are displayed normally (images need to be re-uploaded). Currently, are the cover images being generated directly from the RAW files? Perhaps using the thumbnails to generate the covers might work.

I think I vaguely recall some discussion about that recently. I'll get @mertalev to chime in

I've been having this issue as well, but had no idea how to troubleshoot. I feel like there is something weird with the way NEF works with Zf cameras, perhaps? That's about the only thing I have in common with @Danfi.

Regarding how it appears in Windows' built-in photo viewer, as @Max-Pare said - it loads correctly then re-renders as a corrupted artefacted mess. I have resolved this in my operating system by installing the NEF codec from the Nikon website, but that isn't particularly useful for this project.
