I think it have sense to do something useful for the community with the burned ether (if the burn auction is finally used).

A couple of suggestions:

  1. Try to break a hash: the one who breaks it gets all the accumulated ether. By doing this the community will discover that a certain hash technology it's vulnerable
  2. Bounties for efficient smart contract implementations: suggest functions to be optimized and provide a reference implementation. A smart contract will hold this reference implementations, and have the ability to be called with 3rd party implementations as parameter. If the 3rd party implementation is a valid implementation and consumes less gas, it gets the bounty as reward, and become the new reference implementation
