before/after half-selections

I want a range picker, but I want to be able to quickly say e.g., "any day before the 4th of november" or "any day after the 12th of july." This is useful for e.g. searching for records of events or publications.

It would be nice if there were arguments to let me say that if only one day is selected, the "selection" stripe extends infinitely in one direction or the other, and the side of the range which is open got set as null.

Right now I'm doing that with a "before"/"after" toggle, and it would make an easy workaround if there was a way of showing the information via CSS, such as accepting css variables for half specified ranges or adding a css class each to the "before-range" and "after-range" cells.
