We'd like to be more consistent in the AE relation we use to extend 'cell proliferation' and 'regulation of cell proliferation' annotations.

Documentation on Github suggests that both 'results-in-division-of' and 'acts-on-population-of' are suitable:

https://github.com/geneontology/annotation_extensions/blob/master/doc/acts_on_population_of.md
Comment: Example of use: an annotation of gene X to cell proliferation with acts_on_population_of CL:0000057 means that gene X is involved in the proliferation of fibroblasts.

https://github.com/geneontology/annotation_extensions/blob/master/doc/results_in_division_of.md
Examples given suggest 'positive regulation of cell proliferation' in use with 'results_in_division_of SOME CL'

Could some guidelines be created to come up with a way to distinguishing these? Specific questions include:

Q: For cell proliferation, the examples and current use of 'results_in_division_of' seem to be restricted to 'regulation' GO annotations- is this deliberate?

Q: When should curators use 'results_in_division_of' vs 'regulates_o_acts_on_population_of' for 'regulation of cell proliferation' terms?

Thanks!
