As of Sep 2024:

• Subjects - from EMu DetSubject_tab
• Rights Summary - from EMu DetMediaRightsRef
• Security Department - from EMu SecDepartment_tab
• Subject Part - from EMu AudSubjectPart_tab
• Related Events - Events for MM directly attached to EMu Events
• Related Exhibit Event - Event for MM attached to Exhibit Objects
• Media Form - from EMu ChaMediaForm
• Resource Type - from EMu DetResourceType (where content's type is documented, e.g. images of text as "text" even if file format is jpg)
• Type (format family) - from NetX's grouping for file extensions
• Extension - file extension

Filters for search results ~ Feedback from @RebeccaWilke :

• Can there be consistent filter options between the internal and external user?
  • When doing searches the filter selection varies between what internal and external see and the ordering varies too.
    • Media form should be a filter the internal user can see too.
      • Example: While searching for jars on the non private window I do not see Media Type as a filter, while in a private window, I do see Media Type as a filter.

Currently, users with an in-house login need to use a private window to see what the public sees on the public portal.
We will investigate other setup in case that can change.

• Can filters be removed?
  • I would suggest removing:
    • Size [Small, Tiny]
    • Modified [Older, Past year]
    • Imported [Older]
    • Record status [Active]
    • Publish on the internet [Yes]
    • Related Events (I am not sure on the function of this filter or how this works)

The first five filters listed are now removed. Related Events reflects the EMu Event/s to which a Multimedia record is attached. Those Events are retained as a filter in the portal because they can provide a way to filter by project info/context for how/why certain sets of media were generated, including historic expeditions / Photo Archives.

• What is the difference between Rights Licensee and Rights Type?
  • I think having a rights type filter is nice because the user can filter for media that has creative commons license or public domain for their school project and do not need to seek Field Museum permission.
  • I would like to see one filter although I am not sure which filter would be the best one for the user.

The Rights Summary filter needs to stay and likely lines up most closely with Rights Licensee. Rights Type is removed for now, but can be added back if needed/recommended.

• Can other filters be added (I understand some filters cannot be added presently since the information might not be in EMu or linked to the media assets)
  • Creator/Photographer
  • Date/Date range
  • Separating collection (specimen and objects), exhibits, building, events, person and expedition photos from each other.
    • It might help filter photos between Stanley Field (person) and Stanley Field Hall.
  • Sites/location (of where photo was taken or where the object and/or specimen came from)

• Creator/Photographer is currently a 'text' field in NetX (rather than a filterable 'tag') because there are >1000 different unique Creator values -- even filtered where role = Photographer -- as well as combinations where multiple creators exist for a given media record. Indexing/maintaining this may have a big impact on resources/memory-use in NetX, but we can investigate in dams-test.

  • Cleaning up/merging duplicate Parties will also help set up for converting this to a filter-able field.

• Date Created/range (& Other Dates + Date-Types) - unfortunately the portal doesn't seem to allow range-searches at this point, but results can be sorted by those date-values using the 'sort' drop-down

• Separating -- Are you thinking about this in the sense of allowing results to be filtered by department & keywords, or something else (e.g. new/separate field/s along lines of focal topic/coverage?)

• Sites/Location -- Similar issue to Creator/Photographer, but we will investigate in the dams-test

• In the future can the portal show records that have not been digitized yet or/and records where the photo is too sensitive to display but allows/informs the external user the media exists in the collection and they can ask permission to see it?

Good suggestion -- Possibly. Currently, all NetX assets tie to an EMu Multimedia record, but we could try to figure out a way to do this if you can define criteria for EMu Catalog or Accession (or other?) records that correspond to those otherwise non-digitized records.
