In many Fediverse platforms, version field in /api/v*/instance uses a schema like ${MASTODON_COMPAT_VERSION} (compatible; ${SOFTWARE_NAME} ${VERSION}), for example 4.2.0 (compatible; Hollo 0.4.0). This helps maintaining client compatibility.

This is as good as user-agent sniffing, and won't actually tell you that it's actually compatible with a specific version of the Mastodon API. I would not recommend this.

Some software also expects the version field to follow semver.

If we ever implement this anyway, I think it should be configurable via an option to turn it on and off, and should be off by default. 🤔
