Need to confirm if there anything special regarding of 3.3v LED used at end of cable (ie white or an ultraviolet/ IR style)

I chose to use a bright blue LED. I believe photosensors used in light guns tend to be most sensitive to blue which was the reason for using that.

The drop of the LED and internal protection diode will around 3.5V so the internal 100 ohm resistor should limit current to around 15mA.

White LEDs are lighting a phosphorous so might not have as quick a response which will reduce the tweaks you can make to the horizontal hit position.
