I have a MSU-1 rom for Tales of Phantasia (Complete Arranged) which is missing one (Or more?) sound effects in bsnes.

To reproduce:

  • Start a new game.
  • Progress until you can leave town and go immediately south into the first forest mini dungeon.
  • Progress through the forest until a short cutscene at the end and a battle against a boar
  • After the battle is over the town's alarm bell with start to make a repeated ding sound while you run back through the forest except during any random battles.
  • On the japanese or english patched rom the ding is present in BSNES, but with the MSU-1 rom it is missing.
  • On a SD2SNES with a real Japanese sfc using the MSU-1 rom the ding is also present, but it sounds noticeably different than with the normal roms.

Edit: I converted the pcm files to wav and listened to them all twice, the ding was not present in any of them.

Did this ever work in bsnes?

I also reproduced the behaviour (the lack of sound) using Mednafen (snes_faust) and Snes9x, so it seems common to most/all emulators. There seems to be something happening that is only implemented on the SD2SNES. The real hardware I used was the US SNES Jr.
