Murphy's Law states, "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong". It's a proverb from the late 1940s, and while it's not as academically accurate and influential as Newton's laws of motion, it's generally acknowledged as a rule of thumb across experimental subjects such as social relations, business, research and technology. Even when you pushed your luck, things can unexpectedly go south, so it's always good to prepare for the worst.

Computers have come through many advancements in the last 50 years, but they still remain experimental and can fail if they run into something wrong. Backups exist to help prevent data loss or even roll back to the previously unaffected state in case it happens.
